BAESIANZ X GUTS PRESENT:KIN

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

A GROUP EXHIBITION EXPLORING KINSHIP THROUGH A RAIDCAL LENS,
highlighting queerness, femininity and the familial, hosted at Guts Gallery [2023]
Baesianz Role:
curation, production, design + art direction

Shot across various locations around the world, this selection of works captures the multiplicities of kinship through the outlook of Asian heritage photographers of varying genders, identities, and lived experiences. As we walk by these images, precious moments and candid displays of intimacy greet us at every turn. Each photograph invites a radical revisioning and perspective largely unconsidered of Asian communities living within and outside the West.

In Kin, the message is clear. Closeness and kinship are the collectively nourishing forces that sustain community; the joy and forgotten histories of trans communities in Beirut are archived in Mohamad Abdouni’s images; celebration takes centre stage in Sami Kimberley’s photos of the London-based football team for women, trans and non-binary people of Asian heritage, Baesianz FC; tenderness, youth and soul are championed in Hidhir Badaruddin’s reframing of queer masculinity.

How do we enrich our lives, re-energise and sustain a positive, healthy mindset? Since time began, humans have developed an abundance of rituals and routines which provide joy, growth and grounding; ways to survive. Whether shared generationally, passed around in community, or discovered along the way on individual paths — it’s the sharing of these rituals which enable us as a species to find moments of ease and joy during our time on this planet.

ME 2 U: A collective manifestio is a love letter to the past, present, and future, exploring regenerative themes surrounding rebirth and renewal. Through the exhibition and event series we invites Artists and facilitators of Asian heritage to share their own rituals, objects and tools, encapsulating the purpose of ME 2 U in eight events ranging from medatiave art classes to Supper clubs and a market with goods created by Asian makers.
